The 10-step Korean routine isn't 10 mandatory products. It's a layering order: thinnest, most active formulas go on first, richer ones seal them in. Most people use 4-6 of these steps daily and save the rest for a few times a week.
The Order
- Oil cleanser: dissolves sunscreen, sebum and makeup.
- Water-based cleanser: removes what the oil cleanser left behind (double cleansing).
- Exfoliant: 2-3x a week, not daily.
- Toner: rebalances skin and preps it to absorb what comes next.
- Essence: a thin, hydrating layer between toner and serum.
- Serum / ampoule: your concentrated actives (vitamin C, niacinamide, centella).
- Sheet mask: occasional, not daily.
- Eye cream: thinner skin, needs its own lighter formula.
- Moisturizer: locks everything in.
- Sunscreen (AM only): the step that protects everything else you just did.
What you actually need to do every day
Cleanse, moisturize, and SPF in the morning. Cleanse, treat, moisturize at night. Everything else (essence, mist, masks, exfoliants) layers in around that core as your skin and budget allow. A hydrating mist between toner and serum is one of the easiest single additions: it re-wets the skin so the next product absorbs instead of sitting on top.
Common mistakes
- Applying thick creams before thin serums: the serum can't penetrate.
- Skipping SPF because "it's cloudy": UV passes through cloud cover.
- Exfoliating daily: this is the #1 cause of a compromised barrier.
Do I need all 10 steps every day?
No. Cleanse, moisturize and SPF cover the essentials. The rest are additive layers you bring in as needed.
