Toner, essence and mist all look alike (thin, watery liquids), which is why they get confused constantly. The difference is in what they're formulated to do and when you use them.
Toner
Used right after cleansing. Rebalances your skin's pH and removes any last trace of cleanser or hard water residue, prepping skin to absorb the products that follow.
Essence
Used after toner, before serum. Slightly more concentrated than toner, formulated to deliver a light layer of hydration and active ingredients: think of it as a bridge between "prep" and "treatment."
Mist
The most flexible of the three. A mist can be used anywhere in your routine: after toner to add moisture, mid-day over makeup to refresh skin, or after sun exposure to cool and calm. Unlike toner and essence, it's not tied to one step; it's a top-up whenever skin needs it.
Do you need all three?
Toner and moisturizer cover the basics. Essence is a nice-to-have for extra hydration. A mist is the easiest of the three to justify buying first: it works standalone (no routine required) and solves an immediate problem: tight, dry, or dull-looking skin, any time of day. Both Hyalu-Cica Cloudy Mist and 345 Relief Cream Mist are built for exactly this, a quick spray between steps, over makeup, or whenever skin feels parched.
Can a mist replace a toner?
For a light routine, yes. A hydrating mist right after cleansing does a similar job of prepping skin. For targeted pH-balancing or exfoliating toners, they're not a direct swap.
What's the point of a mist if I already use a moisturizer?
A mist works throughout the day, not just morning and night. It's for refreshing skin over makeup, after sun exposure, or any time skin feels tight, without disturbing your makeup or SPF.
